Our elementary program is designed to support students and their families on a student by student basis. With the support of a BC certified teacher, students and parents develop a Student Learning Plan (SLP) that meets the needs of the student and ensures the curriculum competencies are met. Face to face meetings to discuss progress and identify needs can be arranged on a monthly/bimonthly basis. For families that live further out, communication can take place through phone calls, email, Zoom. Seesaw and our Moodle platform.
Sometimes we have online ‘v-classes’ to learn together. Our most recent ones had us performing some chemistry with Scientists in the School and learning about bird adaptations.
A variety of learning resources are available in the resource classroom, now located at Walnut Park school in Smithers, and further support is available online through our Moodle-Junior platform.
A number of online programs are available to support learning at home including Raz Kids, Duolingo, IXL and Rosetta Stone.
Parents of students in Kindergarten through Grade 4 will have access to an online resource room where they will find curated videos, links to websites that are related to the curriculum and printable resources. You may also come into our room for more hands on items.
Students in grades 5 through 7 will have teacher directed academic courses available if desired. There is also a ‘homeroom’ where more resources can be accessed. Parents have the discretion to direct their child’s learning at these grades as well, provided the curriculum being used meets the BC curriculum standards.
Students enrolled with BVEC can participate in group activities provided by BVEC, join their local in-person school for sports teams and events and are encouraged to join activities with home school families throughout the valley.
If you would like to register your child with BVEC full time, please email Mrs. Bolton (karolina.bolton@sd54.bc.ca) for an initial phone call and the registration papers. We accept new registrations through February 28th for the current school year.
We are planning to have some face to face opportunities and are going to explore Smithers’ venues – including Creative Roots, Saltos Gymnastics, BV Pool and the Smithers Art Gallery. Hopefully we will be able to add some events in Houston as well!
