What You Should Know

BEFORE TAKING AN ONLINE COURSE

Studying online is different in some ways than studying in class, especially when it comes to scheduling your time when there are no set classes, lectures or due dates. Online courses require as much work as courses taken face to face – the main difference is that you can study where and when you want to, so long as you complete all the work and meet all the course requirements.

Our courses are designed to be approximately 120 hours in length for the average student. If you are choosing to complete an online course in one semester of 18 weeks in length, you should expect to work on your course 7-8 hours each week. Most of our courses require a lot of reading and writing; be prepared. If writing is an issue, make use of speech to text technology. If your reading needs support, make use of text to speech technology so that the information given can be read to you. We do provide the use of Office 365 and within this suite of tools you will be able to access these technology supports.

If you are having trouble planning, please see your teacher. They will be able to help give you ideas and will know which assignments or units will take more time to complete. If you are headed out on a holiday, they can help you plan around that as well.

Having trouble understanding the material? Our room is always open! Come on in for some one on one support!

Depending on the course, you will be expected to take exams in person under a teacher’s supervision. Students who learn at home, will also be expected to take exams in our room at SSS.
